You Must Back Up Regularly – Here’s Why

Posted May 12th, 2009 by Steve Venter and filed in Anything Goes

I’m back after a relatively lengthy quiet period. Firstly because I had to put more time and effort into my bricks and mortar business due to the current economic presure. Secondly, my trusty Acer laptop suffered a hard drive failure which meant I had to rebuild my online life from where ever I have saved it in the past. Can’t blame Acer, the laptop is at least 5 years old and I’ve dropped the poor thing a few times. I suppose the last time was just once to much.

As someone coming from the formal computer industry I’ve always believed in doing backups but unfortunately did not follow a well structured plan, hence my information was spread over a number of different media without good date references. So it will take me a while to collect everything and put it in an order that makes sense.

The whole experience was a blessing in disguise though. Forced me to organise my data better and get rid of obselete rubbish. Now I’m looking to find a good automated solution to ensure everthing of importance is backed up regularly. I’ll give some feedback here once I found something worth while.

I now also have oodles of space on my hard drive moving from the old 40GB model to a more modern 160GB. No doubt will fill it with video and mp3 files which I allways had to hive of somewhere else.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you back up you computer information.

  • Backup to at least two different types of media.
  • Remember flash drives are not for long term storage.
  • Keep a record of what you backed up and where – or backup everthing regularly.
  • Remember things like your email, contacts and password files.

I use RoboForm but could not find my last backup. My only resource is a printout I made a few months ago. Needless to say I’ve changed or added a few things since then so I’m realy scratching.

Learn from my mistakes and back up regularly.

Have Fun!

Typical NewBie

Yup, it is already three weeks since my last post, not because I’m lazy, nooo, this newbie was in such a rush to get this blog done that I didn’t keep tabs of my usernames and passwords and then couldn’t log in again  and couldn’t remember where to find them. Biggg lesson!!  Slow down to the speed of lightning and document everything properly.

Now I have it documented properly and will post regularly.

If you’re reading this and you’re a newbie like me, please take heed. Rather spend a little time keeping record of everything and you’ll have a lot more fun and make much faster progress.

If you are new to Online Marketing, lost and wondering where to start, I’ve found this great, very basic introductory course called First Step Internet Marketing. First Time Round WordPress

Posted September 12th, 2008 by Steve Venter and filed in Anything Goes

At last, only 2 hours into the 5 min Set-up and I can make my first post. No fault of WordPress, I’m just more of a dumbo around the technology than I realised. I’m looking forward to really get to know this environment and to enjoy it.

Look forward to some more intelligent posts in the near future.

Tks
