For me that means getting in a bit of fishing.

Hummingbird Fish Finders will make your fishing so much more fun. They help you find fish and thus ensure that you do not return home empty handed and most models also feature a gps facility which allows you to mark all you favourite spots so that you can return easily.

I know some people regard fish finders and gps’ as gadgets that spoil your fun but, realy, most of us have so many things that occupy our minds that we cannot rely on memory and landmarks like granddad use to. Seriously, I would rather spend my time fishing and actually land something than getting lost on the water or spend the day casting for nothing.

So, this is where your Hummingbird Fish Finder comes in. Pick the model that fills your needs and suits your pocket and have more fun fishing.

Your find a selection of Humminbird Fish Finders here.

Oh, and by the way two of the links above are for a Squidoo lens I did on the the subject, so, I was actually working.

I know it is a bit late for new years resolutions but then, I’ve been a bit busy offline off late. I’ve done quite a bit of reading where I can though. One of the things that stands out is “site theme”. I don’t mean WordPress theme, rather how you theme your site.

I know this is old hat to experienced internet marketers but us newbies always try to reinvent the wheel. I’ve been trying to smash together multiple themes, or target markets, on one site. Yup, you’ve guessed it, poor returns. Off course, it could also be that these sites aren’t put together to well but that’s another avenue to persue.

So, my belated new years resolution is to review my sites and look at each one to represent a single theme or idea. I’ve started with http://www.petbedsa.com . Have a look, does it make more sense or not.

It appears that theme-ing (my addition to Oxford) is also more and more important for search engines. Please be clear that this does not mean kwyword stuffing. It means that most of what you add to your site must support one overall theme i.e. dogs in my example.

I have a lot of work to do on a number of my websites so I better stop rambling and get working.

As Always, Enjoy what ever it is your’e doing.

Steve

PotPieGirl Helps Me Make Sense Of Internet Marketing

I’ve been trying out different internet marketing approaches and products for a while now. Like a typical newbie I’ve probably spend more on the latest and gratest than I should have done. Now, however, I’ve discovered PotPieGirl and her One Week Marketing program. What an eye opener!

For the first time the whole internet marketing environment has been put into perspective. The guide is layed out in an easy to follow manner and it provides a simple, step-by-step process for you to get going with internet marketing.

I’ve spend many hours reading ebooks, websites, books and newsletters but I can honestly say that for the first time all the internet marketing concepts are explained in a manner that makes sense to me. The One Week Marketing Guide and ancilliary materials are written in plain English yet comprehensive enough to give you the confidence to start the program immediately.

Between PotPieGirl’s blog and the materials provided with the One Week Marketing guide I was able to answer most questions I had. It is also a great source of reference for every aspect of internet marketing.

I’m most impressed! You can view my first attempt at a Squidoo Lens Here. I plan to build many more. It is so much fun and I may just earn some money from them too!

Allways Have Fun!

If you've being battling to those old resell rights products you've bought or starting out new looking for a decent and reliable resource you will find it here.

If you’ve being rummaging around the internet for any lenght of time you probably have bought quite a few products, just like me, with lots of promises and saved them and forgotten about them. Many of these purchases would have come with so-called Resell Rights or Master Resell Rights or even Private Label Rights.

It sounded good at the time and I thought “well, when I have my internet business set up I will be able to use these”. Problem is, most of us do not have a defined catalog system to file these and find them later with ease. Come the time that we want to use them you have to hunt through hundred of folders (I think I have thousands). Sometimes I just give up and look for another one on the web. You can find a niffty piece of free software to keep track of them here http://www.ebooklibrarianplus.com/ (no there is no affilate link in there, yet!

On the other hand if you’re just starting out, you can save yourself a lot of trouble (and lots of money and time by simply joining Resell Rights Fortune. Yup, there is an affiliate link in there. I’ve discovered this new service and I love it. You can find eBooks on many niche topics, with resell rights, within a minute, download it and use it as you please.

You can make a living by selling other peoples products, at least untill you can develop your own. Products with resell rights are the shortest and cheapest way to get started.

I’m starting a fresh and so can You!

Allways Have Fun!

Well I thought I was just the bee’s knees having set up a new site using cpanel to load WordPress and eCommerce at Pet Beds but during some research I discovered some even more impressive features of WordPress.

An eCommerce Plugin for WordPress. Yup! You do not have to install eCommerce seperately, unless you want to. You simply load the eCommerce Plugin, activate it and you’re ready to go. Configure your store, load products, add your payment processor and you’re in business.

You can see the fruits of my labours at Luxurious Pet Beds in action. This is the cyber twin of Pet Beds where I ’m testing out different options and settings. The theme is designed to work with the eCommerce Plugin and is free too.

We’ll why don’t you get a site going yourself. It literally took me less than an hour to get the basics up and running. Now the work starts to actually load products and get on with the selling.

Allways Have Fun!

I’ve played around with WordPress quite a lot a couple of months ago and then had to cut my online time drastically due to work pressure and so have lost touch with developments.

Over the weekend I decided to set up a test website that I’ve had in mind for a while and decided to use WordPress and eCommerce. I installed both from my domain cpanel using Fantastico de luxe.

Boy, what a pleasure! In less than an hour I had both up and running and could start building the content!

You can see the results here http://www.petbedsa.com . Crazy name I agree, but Pet Beds is what we want to sell. If you have any ideas please let me know. Please visit the Pet Shop while you’re there, its bare bones yet but not bad for less than 2 hours work.

Now I’m full of enthusiam to build the site into a memorable one and with these tools it will only be a pleasure. I still have to solve the headache of a payment processor as our friendly PayPal will not collect money for South Africans but I’ve discovered a few alternative. More about them next time.

Always Have Fun!

I’m back after a relatively lengthy quiet period. Firstly because I had to put more time and effort into my bricks and mortar business due to the current economic presure. Secondly, my trusty Acer laptop suffered a hard drive failure which meant I had to rebuild my online life from where ever I have saved it in the past. Can’t blame Acer, the laptop is at least 5 years old and I’ve dropped the poor thing a few times. I suppose the last time was just once to much.

As someone coming from the formal computer industry I’ve always believed in doing backups but unfortunately did not follow a well structured plan, hence my information was spread over a number of different media without good date references. So it will take me a while to collect everything and put it in an order that makes sense.

The whole experience was a blessing in disguise though. Forced me to organise my data better and get rid of obselete rubbish. Now I’m looking to find a good automated solution to ensure everthing of importance is backed up regularly. I’ll give some feedback here once I found something worth while.

I now also have oodles of space on my hard drive moving from the old 40GB model to a more modern 160GB. No doubt will fill it with video and mp3 files which I allways had to hive of somewhere else.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when you back up you computer information.

Backup to at least two different types of media.

Remember flash drives are not for long term storage.

Keep a record of what you backed up and where – or backup everthing regularly.

Remember things like your email, contacts and password files.

I use RoboForm but could not find my last backup. My only resource is a printout I made a few months ago. Needless to say I’ve changed or added a few things since then so I’m realy scratching.

Learn from my mistakes and back up regularly.

Have Fun!

My experience with research for good, affordable hosting and how I finally decided where to go for my web hosting.

The word “hosting” has many meanings and connotations. If you’re not part of the online marketing world it means accommodating friends or family. In the online marketing world it means finding a place to put your website. Sound easy! For us newbies probably not.

First, you’ll find a bewildering array of offers for web hosting. Many of them supposedly free. Be careful. I’ve learned the hard way, there’s no free lunch. When it says free, something has to pay the way. Either the service will be inferior or you and your visitors will have to put up with someone else’s advertising.

On the other end of the scale you’ll find totally over priced hosting offers, set to catch newbies with an offer you do not understand. Often the services offered are the same and you can find them elsewhere at a more reasonable price. If the hosting for your website will cost you more than $11 a month for a single website you can probably do better.

I’ve done a lot of research and tried a number of alternatives. I’ve found that Hostgator provides me with the best value hosting for my requirements. But even here you have to watch your step and look carefully at all that’s on offer. Remember, you do not have to contract for the largest, biggest or best hosting option from the start. Hostgator makes it real easy to upgrade when you run out of space or bandwidth (two terms which warrants more explaining later).

You should spend some time to look around on the internet at what hosting is available, note I said “look”. Compare the different offers and understand what they mean, then make a decision. Of course you can allways change you’re hosting at a later stage but it can be very painful.

It is also most important that your hosting company provides cpanel support. Cpanel is your interface to manage your website. There are alternative options but they can be confusing. I’ve found that a lot of the free training about hosting refers to cpanel for explanations. Hostgator’s cpanel is very easy to use and they provide good training videos and support.

Enjoy your search for web hosting. Remember there is no rush to make a decision, and you can change your hosting later if you have to.

Always Have Fun!

Yup, I know, everyone will shake their head when they see this post.

Bear with us Newbies. I thought I knew what a domain was but having read a lot about it during the last few days I’ve had to re-think. For instance, Everyone talks about buying a domain, well… it appears that you can’t. You only pay for the exclusive use of that name for a set period, usually a minimum of 1 year. You get the option to renew your use and you can extend the period to ensure availablility.

I was also a bit confused about domains and hosting. Once you’ve paid for the use of your domain name you can’t actually do anything with it, you have to find somewhere to “host” your website using that domain name. But more about “hosting” in a seperate post.

So, where do you “buy” this domain then. Well, after surfing the net and reading a lot, it appears to be quite easy. Maybe to easy. A number of domain name registrars (yup they don’t sell, they register it on your behalf) peddle their services on the net and then they actually do try and sell you a lot of things. Little traps we Newbies can very easily fall into and then we end up with a shopping basket full of things we don’t need. Watch out!

After looking at a number of these domain name sellers I decided to go with GoDaddy. Maybe it was the silly name to start with, but I’ve found GoDaddy’s service very good, their site easy to use and they are one of the biggest (and cheapest!). Off course, being a Newbie I ended up not only with this quirky domain name but also three other domians I don’t really need but will have to find a use for now. Stop by in future at www.steveventer.org , www.steveventer.info , www.steveventer.net and see what I came up with.

So be carefull when you make your selections going through the menus on the GoDaddy site and only select what you really need, else you may end up with a farmyard full of domains like me and have your name pasted all over the net!

You may wonder why you see Steve Venter all over the place. That’s another thing I read somewhere which stated that the first domain you buy should be your own name or some variant thereof. Sounded good at the time, I’m not so sure now but have to live with it. So, think carefully before you select a domain name because it is very easy to register but then it’s yours for at least a year or whichever period you signed up for. Off course Godaddy gives you a few days to request a change but this Newbie only thought about it to late.

Enjoy your hunt for a domain name that you like and that makes sense for what you want to use it for.

Always Have Fun!
